The Howard Athenaeum (1845-1953) was often called the Old Howard. It was originally the site of a Millerite temple that was rebuilt as a playhouse in 1845. This building burned down a few months later and a new structure was rebuilt designed by Isaish Rogers in a Gothic style. These photographs are probably selections from the photographer's series entitled "Boston Document" in which she sought to "show the upheaval caused by urban renewal, and the special quality of Boston." The series grew out of Shwachman's work as the photographer for the Boston Redevelopment Authority from 1960 to 1962.
